Ray Matsen is an award-winning comedy writer (and one-time stand-up and sketch performer) who has created jokes and content for many of Australia’s most well-known and best-loved comedians, including Hamish & Andy, Adam Hills, Rove McManus, Pete Helliar, Russell Gilbert, Magda Szubanski and many more. IMDB

He was a writer for Hamish & Andy on their original Channel 7 Sketch Show, their Channel 10 series Real Stories, and series 1 & 2 of their hit show True Story on Channel 9. 

A long time writer on the original run of popular ABC music quiz show Spicks & Specks, he returned for the top rating 2018 Reunion Show, and was head writer on the 2019 Australian Music Special, the 2020 Decade Specials and several new series.

He was head writer, and animation director, for three seasons of the ABC’s award-winning kid’s sketch series You’re Skitting Me and a writer on Problems, with Sam Simmons,  When TV Was Awesome, Kinne Tonight and many of Australia’s most popular sketch shows.

He has also written for the Channel 7 children’s series Larry the Wonderpup, and was Grant Denyer’s writer and contestant producer for over 200 episodes of the rebooted Family Feud.

He spent two seasons as head writer on the Adam Hills talk show Adam Hills In Gordon St Tonight, and four years as head writer on Rove.

He’s also done a lot of radio work, starting as a writer and presenter for the original breakfast show lineup of Hughesy, Kate & Dave on Melbourne radio station Nova 100, going on to present the Summer Breakfast Show with Meshel Laurie. For the last four years he has been developing ideas and topical material for Melbourne’s top rating Christian O’Connell Show on Gold 104.3 

His many years on stage as a stand-up comedian and sketch performer include six Melbourne International Comedy Festival shows and, in 2001, he co-wrote and performed Brian Munich & Friends which won the 2001 Age Newspaper’s Critic’s Award and Barry Award for best show of the festival.

Ray has also lectured on comedy writing at The Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS), The WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAPA), RMIT and Melbourne University.
